MAYOR'S MESSAGE

We face many challenges in a world where people, cultures and lifestyles are becoming increasingly similar. Many Asian countries are going through periods of massive growth, fast becoming westernised and achieving standards of living similar to our own. Modern transport and communications have created a "global village" in which we can now travel with great ease, relative safety and more cheaply than ever before.

Our nation, through our ability to provide primary resources to the world, has just enjoyed a decade of substantial economic growth. Yet we face the growing reality of climate change, the threat of terrorism, an increasing global population and declining world oil supplies.

There is no doubt the next decade will be one of considerable change for us all.

But by 2020, I am confident that communities from the Mount Remarkable district will look back and be proud of their achievements.

Our district will be a place where communities have succeeded in creating a sustainable future and where people enjoy remarkable lifestyles. In resolving various differences between the ways of the past and the needs of the future with ongoing positive change, our communities will successfully balance work and leisure; the environment and economic development; and contributions to humanity with self interest.

This will distinguish us from many other rural South Australian Communities, and will happen because as a community, we will have all contributed to a renewed spirit of enterprise, innovation and social responsibility. A stronger partnership will be forged which sees government, business and the general community working together to create sustainable Mount Remarkable Communities.

We must continue to recognise and build on our strengths and focus on what our remarkable people can achieve. 2020 Vision represents a long term commitment by Council to work together with commerce, industry, other spheres of government and the general community to further strengthen the quality of life of all residents of the district in an environmentally sensitive and sustainable manner.

Please join with Council in making a commitment to support and be an active part of 2020 Vision.
