Fleabane Weed Spraying Programme

13th January 2025 to Late February 2025

Beginning 13th January, through and up to late February, Council, in conjunction with the Landscape Board SA, will be commencing a spraying program with the aim of eradicating fleabane from our district, or at least controlling it.

The first areas scheduled for spraying will be Survey Road, Melrose, Weeroona Island, Appila to Laura Road and White Cliffs Road.

Why is this happening?

Fleabane is a difficult to control weed which impacts on agriculture due to its use of soil moisture reducing the available moisture for both summer and winter crops. This is known to be associated with yield reduction in a range of cropping situations. When fully grown alongside or on trails and roads, it can restrict the movement of people through these spaces.

Fleabane produces up to 110,000 seeds per plant which are easily dispersed by wind, water, animals, and vehicles allowing the seeds to spread long distances, invading more and more cropping regions rapidly.
