History of the Booleroo Centre Cemetery
Established in 1908, the Booleroo Centre Cemetery is a valued community asset with a treasures history. Donated by Mr James Larkin, who previously owned the land, Section 87W was gifted to the town with the purpose of becoming the community's cemetery grounds. Prior to this time all burials for the residents of the Hundred of Booleroo were conducted at the cemeteries in Melrose, Willowie, Appila and Pekina. Fittingly, on 1 January 1908, Mr Larkin, aged 70, was the first person interred here in plot 101, followed just 18 days later by Florence Jane Ashby aged 29, who holds plot number 1. From here, community groups have played a vital role in the cemeteries upkeep with the Booleroo Centre & Districts Lions Club assisting with upgrades to the Cemetery since 1982.
Projects undertaken include the installation of the gazebo, niche wall and purchase and placement of 150 headstones on unmarked graves as well as upgrading the original barbed wire fencing with the white fence panelling seen today. The Booleroo Centre Cemetery stands as a lasting tribute to those we have lost and is a significant community site that is the final resting place for our respected and valued community members.
