History of the Melrose Cemetery
Proclaimed in 1853, Melrose is recognised as the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges. Its early beginnings were shaped by copper mining activity and its role as a police outpost. As the township has developed, the changing needs of the community and evolving burial practices have influenced the way the cemetery is used. A niche wall was subsequently established alongside traditional burial areas to accommodate the internment of cremated remains in the a dedicated and respectful setting. In 2014, the Council established the Niche Garden, providing additional space for internment alongside the existing niche wall.
During the 1850s and 1860s, Paradise Square, located opposite the present-day Melrose Heritage Centre, served as the main burial ground for the district. From 1854, approximately 128 pioneers were laid to rest there, many of whom were children, reflecting the impact of illnesses in the district, from outbreaks such as whooping cough. These early years were marked by isolation and limited access to medical care, and the number of burials at Paradise Square highlight the challenges faced by families in a remote and developing community. Over time, the site fell into disrepair, and in 1863 the Melrose Cemetery, located at the edge of the township, was established to replace it as the district's primary place of burial. However, burials at Paradise Square continued until its official closure in 1872. At a later date, the remains of a number of those interred there were carefully relocated to the Melrose Cemetery. Paradise Square was subsequently redeveloped and landscaped into the garden setting enjoyed now, providing a lasting acknowledgement of those originally laid to rest there. Today, the cemetery contains the graves of early settlers and later generations, preserving an important record of the district's history. As the needs of the community continued to grow, the cemetery expanded beyond its original boundaries.
Expansion of the Melrose Cemetery
As the Melrose Cemetery approached capacity, the need for additional burial space became evident. In response, the North Eastern Section was established in 2017 to commemorate future internments and provide a sustainable place of burial for the community. The first internment within this section took place in October 2017, marking a new stage in the history of the Melrose Cemetery and supporting the ongoing provision of burial services within the district.
