History of the Wilmington Cemetery
On 18 October 1877, five acres of land adjacent to Section 40 in the Hundred of Gregory was dedicated for burial purposes. Since it establishemen, the site which is also known as Alligator Gorge Cemetery and the Wilmington General Cemetery has experienced several changes in administration. In September 1878, a formal grant was issued, appointing a trust of five respected local citizens to oversee the management and care of the cemetery. As the township developed, a new cemetery trust was appointed on 22 July 1903 to continue its administration and maintenance. Responsibility for the Wilmington General Cemetery was transferred to the Port Germein District Councils, responsibility passed to the newly established District Council of Mount Remarkable, with the transfer formally signed and gazetted on 23 June 1981. The original memorial entrance gates were later removed, repaired and restored, and are now located at the entrance to the Wilmington Golf Course as an enduring reminder of the cemetery's history. Today, the cemetery contains the graves and memorials of many early settlers and long-standing residents of Wilmington and surrounding districts.
