Hard Waste Disposal
As of July 2021 Council no longer provides a hard waste collection service. Historically, over many years this service was made available to residents of the District’s townships of Bruce, Hammond, Port Germein, Melrose, Wilmington, Wirrabara and Booleroo Centre. The service impacted on the daily workload of the works team and in addition Council received complaints from residents outside of the township areas expressing disappointment that they were not being able to access the service.
As a means of providing a service that was all-inclusive, Council decided to provide an annual free dump day which would allow all residents of the District to have access to a service whereby hard waste could be disposed of. It is considered that a free hard waste disposal day generates benefit to the community as well as reducing the likelihood of illegal dumping and unsightly premises. Moving forward Council will plan to provide on an annual basis a free hard waste disposal day to enable residents to clear household items which are too large to fit inside the normal red-lidded waste bins. The free hard waste disposal day will be held in March or April each year and will be promoted via Council’s website, Newsletter and social media platforms.
As of the 2026/2027 financial year, changes have been made to how Council manage free dumping access for the community.
