How Good Are Libraries

Published 20th May 2025

Libraries are more than just books. They are essential to building strong, connected communities. They support early literacy, digital access, social inclusion, community resilience, and lifelong learning.

In South Australia 1 in 4 people are library users. That means over 400,000 people turn to their local library for so much more than just books. Libraries offer digital access, training programs, support, learning, safety and connection for many people.

South Australian councils provide 84% of funding for local libraries! This is a huge show of support, however State Government funding is crucial in supporting libraries so libraries can continue to support literacy, digital access, inclusion and community connections.

This campaign by LGA SA is calling for increased State Government funding to ensure libraries can continue to provide their services support for South Australians.

Closer to home, Council supports the running of the Flinders Mobile Library shared service. This service supports many towns and each school in the district through fortnightly visits. Towns visited are Appila, Booleroo Centre, Melrose, Murray Town, Port Germein, Wilmington and Wirrabara. School visited are Wilmington Primary School, Booleroo Centre District School and Melrose Primary School.

The Flinders Mobile Library Service is part of the “one card” network of South Australian Public Libraries. This means membership with Flinders Mobile Libraries gives you access to every library in South Australia and access to physical collections via the holds system. Your membership also gives you access to a diverse range of eBook, eAudiobook and digital magazine titles for free!
